SSP/Sickness Cover Top-up

SSP in the UK most commonly refers to Statutory Sick Pay. It is a financial support paid to eligible employees who are unable to work due to sickness or injury.

Who is eligible?

You are eligible for SSP if you are classed as an employee, have earned at least £123 per week on average over the previous 13 weeks, and have been off sick for at least 4 consecutive days (including non-working days).

How much is it?

The current rate of SSP is £109.40 per week. You are entitled to SSP for up to 28 weeks for the same illness.

How to claim:

You need to claim SSP from your employer. They will need to complete an SSP1 form and send it to HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC).

More information: You can find more information about SSP on the GOV.UK website: https://www.gov.uk/statutory-sick-pay

It’s important to note that SSP is not the same as sick pay offered by some employers as part of their contract of employment. Sick pay from your employer may be more generous than SSP, and you may be eligible for it even if you do not meet the criteria for SSP.
